The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a test designed to evaluate the English Language proficiency of a non-native English speaker and is recognized by 160 countries around the world by 12,000+ universities and institutions.
TOEFL is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), a non-profit organization that tests the applicants on their understanding of English on four main skills i.e. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
TOEFL Format
The format of TOEFL assesses your ability to read, listen, speak and write in English in social and educational setups. Divided in four different modules of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, the test is conducted in 2 hours duration when taken as an iBT i.e. Internet Based Test. The TOEFL iBT can be take either at a test centre or at home.Reading Section
2 passages with 20 Ques (35 Mins)The Reading sections of TOEFL assesses your ability to read passages and interpret the text. The passages are excerpts from university level text books covering a variety of subject areas. You are not required to have prior knowledge of the subject area to answer the questions, but an ability to understand and answer the questions from within the text in the passages. The section includes 2 passages of approximately 700 words each with 10 questions from each of the passages.
Listening Section
3 Lectures, 2 Conversations with 28 Ques in all (36 Mins)The Listening section of TOEFL is designed to evaluate your understanding of spoken English in form of English conversations and lectures. Through lectures and classroom conversations you are required to find the basic comprehension, understand the speaker’s attitude and degree of certainty and find connecting information. The section includes 3 lectures with a degree of classroom discussion, of 3-5 mins duration, each followed by 6 questions; and 2 conversations of 3 mins each, followed by 5 questions per conversation.
Speaking Section
4 Tasks (16 Mins)The Speaking section of TOEFL assesses your ability to converse or speak in English in an academic setting. The tasks in this section resemble real life situation that you may encounter in or out of class. The first task is an independent task and requires you to draw on your own ideas and talk on a familiar topic; and the remaining 3 tasks require you to discuss or talk about the material you read or heard.
Writing Section
2 Tasks (29 Mins)The Writing section of TOEFL assesses your ability to organize and present your ideas in written English as you’d be required to do in an academic setting. With 2 tasks, the test measures your ability at integrated writing, where you are required to write a response on the basis of a short passage that you read and short lecture that you listen to. The second task evaluates your writing skills for an academic discussion.

You can send your test scores to upto 5 institutions free of cost. But you may order reports to be sent to additional institutions at a cost of $35 per institute.
