The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a systemized test accepted and used worldwide by many graduate and professional schools to check the candidate’s aptitude in multi discipline subjects like Arts, Sciences, Business and Law. GRE along with the academic standing of the candidate helps the admissions team assess the candidate’s preparedness for the Master’s degree program, through different parameters such as critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and reasoning abilities.
The test is a computer based exam and is conducted under 2 formats i.e. General and Subject Tests.
GRE General Test Format
The GRE General test measures your ability to be able to cope in the demanding programmes in the Graduate School through verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing conducted over 3 hours 45 mins. However, this duration will be reduced from September 22, 2023 onwards to 2 hours.Verbal Reasoning

This sections measure your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and analyze relationships among component parts of sentences. This is done through reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence.
Quantitative Reasoning
Current Format: 2 sections with 20 Ques each (35 mins each section)New Format: 2 sections with 27 Ques total (47 mins)
Through a combination of questions posed in real-life settings and that are purely mathematical in nature, this section assesses your understanding of basic mathematical concepts and your ability to reason quantitatively and solve problems using quantitative methods.
Analytical Writing
Current Format: 2 Essays (30 mins each Essay)New Format: 1 Essay (30 Mins)
The Analytical writing section tests your ability to think critical and present your views analytically in writing to articulate and support complex ideas; construct and evaluate arguments; and sustain a focused and coherent discussion.
